This documentary tells the fascinating story of Henry Darger. Darger was a loner and school janitor all his life. Upon his death was discovered in his meager dwelling, a massive and mysterious work of fiction and art. Henry had Quietly produced a 15,143 page illustrated fantasy novel about an alternative universe featuring the main characters, “the Vivian girls”. The illustrations in this book typify what has become known as outsider art.
The film evokes a perfect play of mystery and revelation as it attempts to bring darger’s illustrations and stories to life. This rally is the perfect tale to remind us that we really don’t know most of the people around us.
“I Like Killing Flies” is a tiny little documentary that came out in 2005. Shot by a fella named Matt Mahurin, it follows NYC restauranteur Kenny shopsin as he moves his restaurant from its home for over 30 years to a location just down the street. All this “plot” is just dressing. The real meat of this film is the pocket philosophies that Kenny drops left and right as he cooks, drives, shops, sits, and yes, kills flies. Basically the movie is Kenny talking while he does things. I know it doesn’t sound exciting but it’s the most beautiful portrait of a really unique and interesting perspective.
I couldn’t recommend this film any more highly! It’s easily one of my all time favorites.
I’ve been watching “the 50 documentaries to watch before you die”. It’s a countdown show hosted by the dude from “supersize me”, Morgan spurlock.
I am such a huge fan of documentaries!! I work at a video store and every week on Friday when we get the movies, I immediately look to see what new docs we’ve gotten and will pretty much take all them home for immediate viewing!
Watching this show has inspired me to make my own list. So that’s what I’m going to post about. Cool.
The canopy walk at Bernheim Forest! This is from July 29th on my trip to Kentucky to visit Jim’s family. It was VERY hot that day, and I was so happy that Jim still wanted to take me to the forest!
Bernheim has always been and remains one of the most magical places in my tiny life.
